French talmudist. He was born in Perpignan. He was a participant in
Solomon Adret's polemic against
Maimonides, which led to Adret's excom-municating any person who read philosophical works in his youth. Later Meiri disassociated himself from
Adret, and supported freedom of thought for the scholars of every country. He wrote studies of halakhah, customs, ethics and philosophy. His
Bet ha-Behirah is a commentary on the Talmud.
